Week 5 EDLD 5399-SISE Reflection

A conference was held with my district site supervisor Mrs. Theresa Kohler on Wednesday, May 2 at 1:00pm at the central administration building.  Many areas were discussed during this conference.  Mrs. Kohler shared her great pleasure with some of my key internship projects such as Target Success, Winter Academy, and conversion to Skyward.  In the report Mrs. Kohler reflects on my service as a member of DWEIC and interviews with key leaders in the district.  I was very pleased with my overall review, and look forward to continuing to assist at the administrative level to build my repertoire of skills.

Week 5-Professional Development Plan Reflection

As I developed my Professional Development Plan I started with my focus on building strong relationships and laying the foundation of expectations.  As I moved through the plan I worked to influencing on a larger level.
In my first year I decided to focus on working to develop a strong communication with all stakeholders.  I felt it was important to share the district’s vision and to solicit as much support and input as possible.  I also want to work on ensuring staff is aware of the accountability guidelines; especially because they are so new and changing.  By focusing on the new assessment expectations I will create a strong foundation for improving rigor and decreasing the learning gap.
For the second year of my plan I narrowed the scope just a bit and chose to focus on a more detailed plan to address the rigor of classroom instruction.  I will provide needed support to teachers to promote the use of high-yield instructional strategies. The second goal I established addresses the need for technology to improve efficiency and effectiveness in the area of operations. 
For year three I focused on my relationship with the Board of Trustees and influencing education on a larger level.  This does not insinuate that I would not work on developing a relationship with the board in year one and two, but after two years I would then make this more of a focus.  I feel I would have a better understanding for areas that need to be addressed.  I would also work to join forces with other districts and superintendents to make a difference on the state level.  I truly believe real change is needed in the funding and the accountability areas of public education. 
There are so many areas that would need to be addressed, but after careful review I feel I have selected key goals to direct my attention over the next three years.

EDLD 5399 Week 4-Reflecting on Reflection

At first thought I did not see the complete value of reflection.  I have so many tasks to complete in a day I could not imagine how reflection would be worth the time I would have to invest.  Not to say I did not take the time to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of decisions, but to really take time to reflect on the entire process was definitely an area I was deficient.  After utilizing reflection to such an extent as this program required allowed me to realize how reflection, and the input from others, really creates a vivid picture about the quality of a particular action.  As stated in the text, School leadership internship, 2nd edition on page 106 “Reflection is learning to analyze prior experiences in order to better understand how they shape future courses of action; it is thinking about how actions are connected to cultural norms, to initial experiences growing up, institutional histories, and on-the-job experience.”  I now realize that reflection is the key to making better decisions in the future and preventing the same mistake be repeated.
     There are several course assignment activities that have utilized reflection.  In EDLD 5342 there were several opportunities to reflect on personal experiences regarding ethical issues.  Taking examples of situations that were real life and reflecting on the things that lead to such actions was very powerful.  I was then able to read reflections of other students and gain insight on activities that occurred that some individuals did not even realize were considered unethical.  In EDLD 5396 it was enlightening to take the self-assessment of the competencies and to reflect on the areas of strength and the areas that need improvement.  To then complete this activity in the final internship course has shown a significant amount of growth.
     Creating the blog and the wiki was a new adventure for me.  Now that I go back and review the items posted to these two sites I see how much I have accomplished during this program.  One of the most recent reflection activities posted to the blog that had a significant amount of impact was the lessons learned from action research.  To go back and reflect on all the activities conducted throughout this program showed just how much I was able to accomplish in such a short period of time.  During our finance class we were asked to reflect on the conversation with the superintendent regarding personnel salaries and financial audits.  Conducting the group work during the finance class through the wiki was another example of an opportunity to reflect on personal opinion and come to a consensus as a group. 
     The reflection provided for each of the 38 activities from the site-supervised logs has provided me with great insight as to which projects made an impact and which ones were not quite as meaningful.  I am very excited to look back at my reflections and realize that I was a part of two projects that went to the Board of Trustees and were approved as new programs in the district.  I was also part of a staff development opportunity that was deemed successful by administrators and teachers throughout the district.
     Each time an assessment was scored and returned I always took time to reflect on not only the ones I missed, but also which questions I got correct.  This reflection process helps me determine the areas I need to build up and get better, and which areas I seem to show consistent strength and no longer need to dwell in this particular area. 
     I definitely take more stock in reflection after completing this program than I did when I began.  I plan to use reflection throughout my career, but will start using reflection immediately as I wind down another school year as an elementary principal.  I intend to have each staff member write a reflection for this school year.  I plan to have them reflect about the implementation of our CSCOPE program, and then expect them to pick one other area of their choice to reflect on.  I think it would be too overwhelming for them, and for me, to expect a reflection of the entire year, but certainly see where picking key areas would provide me with a great deal of insight that might not otherwise be shared.  During committee meetings we use a plus/delta format to collect input.  I would take these bullets and construct an overall reflection to capture the overall essence of the discussion.

Action Research Lesson Learned-Week 3 EDLD 5399

     In reflecting back on all the various projects I was able to complete three main recommendations came to mind.  The first recommendation I have is to continue to improve communication with stakeholders.  Our district is large and spread out in a variety of communities.  Fortunately, we have a position devoted to communication.  The Public Information Officer does a wonderful job of keeping websites up to date, and works well with the media, but this is always an area that needs attention.  Another recommendation I have is for the district to devote more attention to addressing cultural diversity.  Campus conduct their own recognitions, but I would like to see the district more involved with common recognitions.  The third recommendation I have is developing a consistent plan for extra-curricular activities at the elementary level. There are 10 different elementary campuses in the district, and all of us run different after-school programs.  I completely understand that each campus needs to have the autonomy to make selections based on student demographics and interest, but there are some activities that need to be emphasized so students are better prepared when they meet up at the four intermediate campuses, which do have a standardized program. 
     There were three main areas that I felt like I really helped make a difference and hope the district continues with the initiatives.    Target Success was one of my major internship projects that I was able to initiate and eventually was board approved.  Target Success is a screener and interview process that will provide an efficient and effective way for administrators to select strong candidates to interview for teaching positions and will then provide a consistent interview process.  Campus administrators will be able to work together to interview applicants and find a strong fit for open positions.  This particular program is new to Texas, but is much like Gallop or Ventures.  A second project I was a part of was the selection process for the district’s new PEIMS operating system.  After sitting through presentations, and completing rubrics, the committee selected the Skyward system.  This was another project I participated in from beginning to board approval.  I am now on the team to be a trainer for the district, and look forward to utilizing this new system next year.  Assisting to establish an ALDA (Administrator Leadership Development Academy) session for aspiring assistant principals was another project I hope the district continues to foster.  I started this project with an interview to current assistant principals new to the position.  I was able to gather feedback from these individuals and share the results with the Deputy Superintendent, Mr. Johnson.  Mr. Johnson then took the information and created three academy sessions tailored to share information related to the assistant principal position.  The participants were able to ask questions and were given information that would better prepare them for the tough job ahead. 
     I am so glad I had the opportunity to perform the tasks throughout this program.  Many of the activities have given me information that I am able to implement immediately as a campus administrator.  I look forward to one day utilizing the experiences to run my own district.

Competency Review Reflection

Taking time to reflect on all the projects completed through this program has been extremely beneficial.  I can’t believe all of the things I have accomplished during this time.  Although all of my projects offered insight in some way, a few of my projects were more involving and therefore offered a richer experience.  The first project that comes to mind was primarily based on Competency 7 and assisting in the coordination of staff development for the entire district.  I was able to assist in this project from beginning to end, and learned a great deal about what areas must be addressed to ensure all participants receive the quality training expected.  I assisted in bringing in an interview process called Target Success, which was another project in Competency 7.    Being able to work firsthand with such projects certainly gave me a different view, and helped me better understand from the perspective of a superintendent.



Other key projects that really developed my abilities as a future superintendent were serving as a committee member in the selection of a new PEIMS operating system.  During this project I assisted in selecting and implementing Skyward.  My interview with the transportation department, maintenance department, food service department, human resources, public information, and the superintendent himself provided a wealth of information.
